The Opportunity of a Lifetime

By 2040, new global cancer cases are expected to rise to a staggering 29.5 million. As the region’s only National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, it is The University of Kansas Cancer Center’s duty to rise to this challenge with more groundbreaking research and innovative treatments that extend to every patient.

Last summer, we received a historic $100 million lead gift from The Sunderland Foundation to build a new cancer center. This, coupled with the $43 million in congressionally directed spending secured by U.S. Senator Jerry Moran earlier in 2023, puts us on a strong trajectory to revolutionize the way we approach cancer.

Imagine a space where the researchers and clinicians converge, where innovation meets practice. The building will be a bridge between research and clinical activities, promoting collaboration and a seamless flow of information between faculty. Integration across the cancer research and care spectrum supercharges our progress in treating and preventing cancer. We can fast-track discoveries, redefine care and move closer to a future beyond cancer.

Our vision extends well beyond bricks and mortar. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to create a facility that helps us serve our communities well into the 21st century. We aspire to be one of the best cancer centers in the world, a beacon of hope for all who come here. Our patients and our communities deserve nothing less.

With gratitude,
ROY A. JENSEN, MD
Vice Chancellor and Director, The University of Kansas Cancer Center
Director, Kansas Masonic Cancer Research Institute
