Lisa Harlan-Williams, PhD, associate professor of Cell Biology and Physiology, has been appointed associate director for Education at The University of Kansas Cancer Center. In this role, Dr. Harlan-Williams will oversee cancer-related educational and career development initiatives across a broad spectrum, supporting individuals from high school students through undergraduates, graduates, and medical students, to junior faculty. She succeeds Danny Welch, PhD, professor of Cancer Biology, who began KU Cancer Center’s Cancer Research Training and Educational component and led the effort for six years.

“I am excited about this opportunity to lead the cancer center’s initiatives to create an inclusive training and career development environment for both the current and next generation of leaders in cancer research and clinical care,” Dr. Harlan-Williams said. “We offer many cancer research education and career enhancement opportunities for our trainees, and I look forward to launching new initiatives to ensure a well-trained, successful oncology workforce that will help address the burden of cancer in the cancer center’s catchment area and beyond.”

With 28 years of educational experience, Dr. Harlan-Williams has played a pivotal role in the academic and professional development of students across various scientific disciplines. Dr. Harlan-Williams has also made substantial contributions to diversity and inclusion in science education. She was integral to the launch of the cancer center’s Accelerate Cancer Education (ACE) program. This summer research experience is designed for high school students, providing them with valuable exposure to scientific careers.

“Dr. Harlan-Williams’ new role as Associate Director for Education is a testament to her outstanding contributions and leadership in developing innovative educational programs and supporting the next generation of scientists,” Dr. Jensen said. “We are thrilled to have her leading our efforts and look forward to the continued positive impact she will make. We also extend our sincere gratitude to Dr. Welch for his dedicated service in this role, which has laid a strong foundation for future successes.”
